Golden Ears Bridge Opening
Date: June 14, 2009
Greater Vancouver's newest bridge, the
Golden Ears
Bridge, crosses the Fraser River to join the towns of Surrey and
Langley to the south with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to the north.
It replaces the small Albion Ferry, which often has long waits to
board. With six lanes for traffic plus a separate
bicycle/pedestrian lane, it provides a convenient crossing
between the crowded Port Mann Bridge to the west, and the bridge
in Mission to the east. As is common in BC, it will be a toll bridge
until the construction costs are recovered. Cars without a
transponder will be charged $3.90; pedestrians and bicycles will be
allowed to cross for free, as will the TransLink city buses. A
reported 50,000 people attended the Grand Opening party.
